It Smelled of No Intelligence.

The hot news doing the rounds at the moment is what’s happened in the latest attempt by the IDiots to promote their creationist crap. Apparently the fallout’s already hit the ground as the story becomes known about how Paul Zachary (”PZ”) Myers, a biology professor at the University of Minnesota in the US, was effectively thrown out of a pre-release screening session (despite the fact that he is featured in the film and his name is listed in the end credits).

Presumably the reason he was evicted is that he would be asking awkward questions during the Q&A after the film’s showing; questions that the IDiots wouldn’t quite be in the mood for answering. This sort of behaviour certainly doesn’t do the ID cause any favours, although it probably won’t register with the addled brains of their followers. Nice one, guys: try and convince the rest of the world that your cause is just and that truth is on your side by getting rid of anyone who has a different opinion and will more than likely blow gaping holes in your arguments. Of course the really funny thing is that the premise of Expelled is that Big Science is suppressive and secretive and dogmatic and all that sort of stuff, and so it gets rid of any dissidents that threaten the status quo.

Oh, the irony. Can we spell hypocrisy, children?

Anyway, I’ll be most interested to see this film when it comes to Australia, IF it comes to Australia, that is. With the amount of hoopla that’s resulted from the negative publicity from all of this, I wouldn’t be in the least surprised if their financial backers pulled the plug, if only to avoid dying from the sheer embarrassment of being associated with the movie.

I feel ambivalent about going to see Expelled, but purely from the point of my not wanting to give these twits any of my money. I suppose I can look at it as paying them to give me a good laugh. Or, I can just wait it out and get it for a few dollars as a DVD rental months after the hubbub has dissipated, and there’s nothing better to do one weekend.

From their web site, it says that it opens in theatres in the US on April 18. When (or if) it makes its way out here is another matter.

More information on the events described is on PZ Myers’ blog.
